What is Acne Awareness Month you ask? It’s a month dedicated to individuals who have acne, and to help those gather the best advice on how to treat it and take care of your skin with a positive mindset! A lot of the information you see on the internet can be overwhelming, but we’re here to help — bringing you only the best tips and advice for dealing with blemishes!

♥ TIP #1: Reduce your sugar intake ♥
Saying goodbye to a sugar habit is challenging—even for the most determined of us. Now, this doesn't mean cutting sugar out completely—we all need a little sweetness in our lives, but only a little! According to the American Heart Association, the daily recommendation of sugar for women is no more than six teaspoons. The sugars found in the fruits and veggies we love include good-for-you vitamins, minerals, and fiber. However, the sugars found in the donuts and the cupcakes (we also love) are not good for us in the long haul. By dialing back on your intake of added sugar, you'll rack up all the health benefits like:

  • Younger and clearer looking skin

  • Longer lasting energy

  • Say buh-bye to belly fat

  • Helps you drop pounds faster

And help you maintain your skin's natural elasticity and prevent premature wrinkles!

♥ TIP #2: Find better ways of dealing with stress ♥
Dealing with stress is a major key to living a mentally strong life. Stress—whether it be from school, financial setbacks, health problems, or relationship troubles, it's important to not let stress drag you down. Finding remedies to deal with your problems all comes down to your personal preference. Just remember to:

  • Accept that stress is part of life

  • Take care of your physical health

  • Choose healthy coping skills

  • Balancing social activity with solitude

  • Looking for the silver lining

Every bad day makes the good days that much better. By following these coping methods, your stress hormones that are released when you have anxiety will reduce the amount of skin oils released. Meaning  less pores being clogged!

♥ TIP #3: Stay hydrated ♥
Drinking water maintains your body's digestion. Think of your body as a machine and food as fuel. Well, water is an essential fuel your body needs to keep it up and running! Read our blog on Hacks to Rescue Your Skin After a Crazy Friday Night on body hydration tips.

♥ TIP #4: Use non-comedogenic makeup & skincare products ♥
Often times our breakouts are caused because of clogged pores, that could be due to a number of reasons, but one of the most common reasons is comedogenic makeup and skincare! Meaning, products that are clogging our pores and causing our skin to release more oil. Non-comedogenic ingredients are formulated so that they do not clog your pores, making it perfect if you have acne-prone skin. It's important to look out for these comedogenic ingredients:

  • Isopropyl Isostearate

  • Myristyl Myristate

  • Acetylated Lanolin

  • Coconut butter/oil

  • Cocoa butter

Our own little trick is to use SPOTTED! Anti-Blemish Clear Spot Patches! They are clear sticker-like patches free from parabens, artificial fragrances, and pigments that you can put on before bed and leave on overnight. These vegan spot patches help to combat even the harshest of blemishes and contain key ingredients like:

  • 0.5% Salicylic Acid: Gently exfoliates skin, breaks down fatty compounds such as oily sebum and increases cell turnover

  • Volcanic Ash: Helps to purify and detoxify skin, stimulates blood circulation

  • Tea Tree Oil: Antifungal and antibacterial, aids in the healing process of acne Canadian Willow Herb - Soothes skin

Dealing with breakouts and blemishes can cause us to become self-conscious and insecure. From one Maskeraide Babe to another, get inspired by others in the skin positivity movement! Check out the hashtag #skinpositivity on Instagram and experience the growth of others this Acne Awareness Month!
