Why Our New Year’s Resolution Is To Practice Mindfulness Meditation

The new year is approaching and we are excited! 2019 is the year of self-care. That is why our new year's resolution is to practice mindfulness meditation to help us relax our mind, body and spirit. We are stepping away from our busy lives to re-learn how to enjoy the little things. Mindfulness meditation has been around for thousands of years and has been scientifically proven to lower stress levels. It is a very simple but effective way to improve well-being. Mindfulness meditation is all about awareness and the key to a happy, healthy life. It trains our brains to focus all attention on the present and become aware of all thoughts, feelings, sensations and surroundings.

To quote Jon Kabat-Zinn, “Mindfulness is awareness that arises through paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, non-judgementally… It’s about knowing what is on your mind.”

There are many ways to incorporate mindfulness meditation into your day. Follow this simple exercise to achieve a state of alert relaxation…

  1. Begin by finding a comfortable position

  2. Breathe in through your nose, and out with your mouth

  3. With your eyes closed, start to concentrate on your breathing

  4. Become aware of each inhale and exhale

  5. Notice the volume, speed, warmth and sound of each breath. Do you hear air flowing into your nose as you inhale? Do you feel your stomach fall as you exhale?

  6. Now that you are conscious of all aspects of your breathing, allow yourself to become aware of all senses. What can you see? Can you feel an itch? Do you hear a slight ringing?

  7. If you feel your mind start to wander, gently bring your attention back to the sensations of each breath

  8. Continue to engage all senses and bring your attention to the thoughts in your mind

  9. Take notice of them and without judgment, accept those thoughts

  10. When you feel your mindfulness meditation is complete, begin to slowly open your eyes and take a moment reflect on your experience

Now that you have completed this exercise, invite mindfulness meditation into your everyday life. By practicing 10 minutes each day, you will be able to achieve mental clarity. The more you practice, the easier it becomes.
